In 30 seconds
- Start with the goal, not the subjects: which degree or career is your child aiming for?
- ICT fits every stream: Science, Commerce, Technology and Arts all have a strong ICT combination.
- Check the fit: match the combination to your child's strongest O/L subjects, and confirm degree requirements in the latest UGC handbook.
After the O/L results, families have only a short time to make a decision that shapes the next two years and beyond. If ICT is on your list, the next question is which subjects to take alongside it. Here is a simple, goal-first way to choose between the main A/L subject combinations with ICT.
Step 1: Start with the goal, not the subjects
The most common mistake is choosing subjects first and thinking about degrees later. Flip the order:
- Picture the goal. Where does your child want to be in five years: a computing degree, business, engineering, a technology degree, or not decided yet?
- Find the degrees that lead there. The latest University Grants Commission (UGC) admission handbook lists subject requirements for state university courses, and private degree providers publish their own.
- Pick the combination that meets those requirements and plays to your child's strengths.
Not sure yet? That is completely normal. Choose a combination that keeps several doors open.
Step 2: Choose your stream
Here are the main A/L subject combinations with ICT, one card per stream:
🔬 Science
Combined Maths + Physics + ICT
Best for: students strong in mathematics who enjoy problem-solving.
Leads to: computing, software engineering, engineering-related and data degrees.
📊 Commerce
Accounting + Economics + ICT
Best for: students who like business, numbers and analysis.
Leads to: business, finance, information systems and IT management.
💼 Commerce (alternative)
Accounting + Business Studies + ICT
Best for: students interested in organisations and management.
Leads to: management, business IT and entrepreneurship.
⚙️ Technology
Engineering Tech + Science for Tech + ICT
Best for: students who enjoy practical, hands-on technology.
Leads to: technology degrees, networking and systems roles.
🎨 Arts
ICT + languages, literature or other Arts subjects
Best for: students strong in languages and humanities.
Leads to: media, education, management and IT-related programmes.
Always verify: university requirements can change from year to year. Before you decide, confirm the requirements for your child's target degrees in the current UGC handbook or with the degree provider.
Step 3: Check the fit with your child's strengths
Results depend heavily on how well a student fits their subjects. Look honestly at four things:
- Mathematics: Combined Mathematics is demanding. Strong O/L Mathematics and a real enjoyment of maths are good signs.
- Logical thinking: ICT rewards students who like working through problems step by step.
- Interests: a student who enjoys business news will stay motivated in Commerce more easily than one who loves building things.
- Language: ICT in English medium prepares students for degrees and careers that use English. See why English medium matters for A/L ICT.
5 mistakes to avoid
- Following friends. The right combination for a friend may be the wrong one for your child.
- Chasing a "Z-score advantage" alone. A subject your child is strong in and enjoys usually produces better results.
- Ignoring the workload. Some combinations need far more practice time than others. Plan for it.
- Skipping the requirements check. Confirm the target degrees' subject requirements before the first term starts.
- Deciding without talking to teachers. Teachers who know A/L subjects can tell you what each one really involves day to day.
Your decision checklist
- We know the degree or career direction, or chose a combination that keeps options open.
- We have checked the subject requirements of the target degrees.
- The combination matches our child's strongest O/L subjects and interests.
- Our child understands the workload, especially programming practice in ICT.
- We have a plan for classes and practice from the first month.
If ICT is part of your child's combination, a strong first term makes everything easier. For the bigger picture, read why A/L ICT is worth choosing and our subject selection guide, and see the class timetable for upcoming batches.
