At Meta’s first Build with AI Summit in Bengaluru, Yann LeCun, Meta’s VP and chief AI scientist, assured that AI is not here to dominate humanity, but to enhance human intelligence. He explained that AI assistants, though they may become smarter than us, are tools to empower rather than threaten us.
LeCun highlighted India’s growing role in AI development, both for local products and the global market. With open-source AI models like Meta’s Llama, AI is becoming a shared global resource. He emphasized that open-source technology is crucial for the future, allowing AI to serve as a common infrastructure.
Meta AI, already with 500 million users, is set to be the most widely used assistant by 2024, with India leading the charge. LeCun also shared that Meta’s AI assistant is available in English and Hindi on platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.
Additionally, Meta introduced AI Studio in India, letting users create AI-powered avatars based on their preferences.
While AI is advancing quickly, LeCun reminded us that current AI models aren’t as intelligent as a four-year-old, and human-level AI remains a distant goal. However, Meta is working on next-gen AI systems through projects like Advanced Machine Intelligence, which aim to push the boundaries of AI’s capabilities.
In short, AI is here to enhance our abilities, not replace them.
